Kazaa Owner Gets OK to Sue Movie, Record Companies


LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A U.S. federal court has cleared the way for Kazaa file-sharing software
owner Sharman Networks to sue the entertainment industry for copyright infringement, Sharman said
on Friday.

Sharman, targeted by studios and record companies because its software is used to trade music and
video files, has sought to turn the tables on the industry, accusing it of misusing Kazaa software
to invade users' privacy and send corrupt files and threatening messages.

Studios and record companies had asked the court to throw out Sharman's countersuit, but U.S.
District Judge Stephen Wilson in Los Angeles declined to do so.

Sharman, headquartered on the island nation of Vanuatu in the South Pacific, said it would pursue
the case.



And, in case you were curious about the "most successful rover mission" to Mars, Spirit has sent back more diagnostic info since NASA lost contact a few days ago. So far, however, it isn't responding to commands. In the meantime, Opportunity, the "other" rover, is set to land in about six hours. Just two open-ended questions here:



• How quickly do you figure NASA scientists are going bald right now?


• How long before someone will be on Mars and able to give the rovers a swift kick across that rusty Martian landscape?

So I guess the Spirit mars-rover is kaput as of the moment... it could either be software or hardware. If it's software, they can send it patches from earth... but if hardware is the problem then there's trouble. But either way, hopefully Spirit's twin mars-rover makes a safe landing tomorrow afternoon and doesn't have any techincal problems.

What if martians found Spirit and purposely broke it so that we couldn't spy on them? That would be fucked.
