Slightly biased, but an interesting article nonetheless about Wikipedia's dealings with - and defiance of - China:

The founder of Wikipedia, the online encyclopaedia written by its users, has defied the Chinese government by refusing to bow to censorship of politically sensitive entries.

Jimmy Wales, one of the 100 most influential people in the world according to Time magazine, challenged other internet companies, including Google, to justify their claim that they could do more good than harm by co-operating with Beijing.
...

Wales said censorship was ' antithetical to the philosophy of Wikipedia. We occupy a position in the culture that I wish Google would take up, which is that we stand for the freedom for information, and for us to compromise I think would send very much the wrong signal: that there's no one left on the planet who's willing to say "You know what? We're not going to give up."'

Toward the end, there's some self-promotion of irrepressible.info, but it's good to see someone (albeit a non-profit group) sticking to its values on censorship and free speech.

Congrats on the new job Jesse - sounds like you're much more excited about this than the bridge-building.

The dog was called Puppy by the people who were taking care of him, so they suggested Guppy to me - but I'm not sure I like that. He doesn't really recognize either anyways.... so, I dunno. Also, he's really hard to take pictures of.

Congrats, Jess. I notice a lot of pronouns, though. Any word on a name?

Jess got a new dog!!

I think he's a cross between this:

and this (only not so fluffy):

He's 18 months old, about 20" tall, and super-cute. Very friendly and easy-going, and apparently he lived a while on a farm with cows, which he got along with, so I'm hoping that will translate easily into getting along with horses. When he wakes up I'll take a picture of him.

Oh, he woke up

oh, for Pete's sake, I forgot all about the hockey game... and now I can't go. meh, oh well. y'all have fun now, you hear?

And as for the whole university friendlessness thing... I've just sort-of accepted it and migrated inot the lab in my time off... but theoretically I'm 'working' when I'm not in class, for 36 hours a week... plus the 9 I'm spending on the class I'm ta-ing...

Though, regardless of all that, we should find time to hang out, us campus-dwellers. let's hang out! ... whenever those of us left have time...

They just think they're better than us, Mary, by having moved on. A preposterous notion, I know.

Speaking of university and things happening at it, the Bears/Oilers-Rookies game is tomorrow night at 7:00. Seeing as it's general seating, I intend to get there a little bit early. If you'd like me to save a seat, let me know. If you'd like to grab a bite to eat with me before the game (but after 5:00) also let me know.
