but, Taylor, the likelihood of it being that personally relevant are rather small. I mean, how many kids have a hookah? and besides, parents aren't usually concerned about the kids' belongings, it's their own they're after protecting... though I can see the merit in saying something like "... or you'll break a lamp" but mostly it comes out as "because I said so" and that, while being the ultimate parent-rule justification doesn't help us prepare for the longterm personal consequences when we try to do things for ourselves.

my particular section of the "because I said so" rule connundrum happens to be room cleaning... 'cause it's one thing when you're eight to be told that all your cars with wheels need to be moved or someone's going to step on them, slip and fall, and a completely other thing when the room's just a hideous mess and anyone visiting it surmises that not only are you a slob but you "must be depressed" because you don't appear to care what your room looks like. who knew there'd be such implications for just not having enough time to deal with all the stuff that's accumulated over the summer? And, it's a perfect example of the need for personal relevance. "Clean up or people are going to think you're a basket case" is a much more motivating direction than "those stuffed animals need to get off the floor or else" because, who has stuffed animals any more anyway?

well, in my defense, I am not a basket case (I don't think!), but I sure as hell don't have the time right now to clean up and prove it. ... goin' to GP tomorrow, whee! another week sucked into the vacuum of scientific research...

Good luck pickin' up the pieces of your hookah

you know how parents make these really vague nebulous statements like "don't kick that soccer ball in the house"? If you ask me, that sounds like counter-intuitive rationale. They should really put an effort into qualifying those statements and attempt to apply some relevancy. Like if they said "don't kick that soccer ball in the house or you'll knock over your computer monitor and spill the ashes from your hookah all over the floor", then I probably would've paid more attention to what they had to say.

FUCK.

Coyotes, Comrie not close in negotiations:

A source close to the negotiations, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said at this point the parties are so far apart financially it seems unlikely a new deal will be agreed upon before Comrie’s arbitration hearing Aug. 4.

Sure, the Oilers lost Pronger. But think about how much worse it could be...

the trigger is red, so it's obviously the red dude. That's why he's the leader. Also, you'll notice that the green dude is less than enthused throughout the whole comic... I think that alludes to the fact that he's the next to go after bluey's gone and he's having a bit of an existential crisis at this point.
