Hey folks... registration for Summer League Ultimate Frisbee is opening up in April. It's $25 per person, and $650 per team. When I played it worked out to $75 (It depends on how many people we can get onto a team). It's a mixed (as in guys and girls) league, so if you, or someone you know is iterested - let me know and we'll see if we can pull this off.

yeah, Paras... I was thinking the same thing about how the body is pretty good at changing its metabolism and adapting to food supply. For that reason I'm thinking I'm gonna "ease my way in". I'm gonna slowly reduce how much I eat in the week prior to fasting. I mean, I'll eat enough to be healthy, but I'm not gonna over-eat like I typically tend to do. I think just going "cold-turkey" will be too much of a shock to my system. But if it gets used to having somewhat less food around, I think I will be better adapted to the challenge.

Anyway... I think Clarky is gonna witness the whole deal and he'll keep you guys updated as to whether or not I've been cheating. As for when he's not around, you'll just have to take my word for it I'm afraid. I'll be honest though, I promise.

Now, I need to call on the magical skills of all you bio geeks out there. All two and a half of you. I'm doing an assignment and I need to know what the advantage is for the cell of having importins which are specific to only certain cargo. In this case, I'm looking at an importin that binds specifically with ribosomal binding proteins. Any ideas?

Tay, it's an admirable effort. There's a Jain religious event where you try to limit harmful actions for a week and then there's a ceremony of forgiveness at the end. I've tried to do what's called 'ekvas' for that week -- where you only eat/drink once, in one sitting, and that's it for the day (we even brush our teeth in that one sitting, which is a little weird...). I'll admit that I had trouble with it. Actively trying to got 5 work days while fasting is a challenge I know I couldn't take up.

I'd be surprised if you lost a ton of weight, though. I can imagine you losing glycogen and the associated water weight (which is, admittedly, significant), but that would happen very early on. After that, your body is quite good at changing energy sources and reducing your metabolic rate (we're built to survive periods without food, and to hang on to extra energy when we have it; that's why obesity is a problem in a society of plenty.)

Regardless of whether you use your muscles or not, though, you are going to lose muscle mass. I'm afraid there's no way around that. Your brain runs on glucose and the only way to produce it from body stores is from protein.

As for making a wager, I'd rather not. I get the feeling that you're just crazy enough to pull it off.

I don't see why you'll need a donation, though. I mean, how much are you saving by not eating five days' worth of food?
