I was recently pointed towards a photo blog from the Boston Globe, The Big Picture. The link I followed indicated its uniquity was its use of large (ie. 1024x768) images to tell its stories, and to rely on the images to tell the story.

It's an interesting blog, with some truly stunning images. The above is from the following story:Sidoarjo's Man-made Mud Volcano:
On the two-year anniversary of its eruption, international scientists say they are almost certain a mud volcano that displaced tens of thousands of villagers in central Indonesia was caused by faulty drilling of a gas exploration well - not an earthquake as claimed by the gas company. "We are more certain than ever that the Lusi mud volcano is an unnatural disaster and was triggered by drilling" said Richard Davies, lead author of a study published this week in the academic journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Two years ago now, on 28 May 2006, gas company PT Lapindo Brantas exploring for gas in Sidoarjo, in East Java, Indonesia, drilled a borehole. At 5 AM, a secondary stage of drilling began and the drill string went about 9,300 feet down, after which the first small eruption of water, steam and a small amount of gas occurred at a location just southwest of the well. Several other eruptions followed over the next few days. The flow of hot mud has not ceased since.

Fourteen people have been killed and 30,000 people have been evacuated from the area. At least a dozen villages, with more than 10,000 homes have been destroyed while schools, offices and factories have also been wiped out and a major impact on the wider marine and coastal environment is expected.

Looks like things went well.

Also, that was one hell of a two-part Doctor Who.

And for those who know him, I should really show you the program from Anish's wedding. Very few people, I think, would be able to sneak the word 'n00b' in there, yet he managed it somehow.

HOLY SHIT PARAS!!! I haven't seen that cartoon since I was a kid, and I always wondered about that applecore thing too! I have it on VHS at my parents house and I used to watch it OVER AND OVER AND OVER. I always thought it went like this:

"applecore"
"Mortimore" (like a person's name)
"who's your friend?"
"me!".

And I never knew why they did that in all these years. And I always wondered who "Mortimore" was (though in your case you apparently interpreted it as Baltimore). Recently I was thinking about the applecore thing again and I decided that it wasn't "mortimore" like the name but really the french words "morte amour" as in "death/love". I ended up using those words in a song that I wrote a few months ago and it all stems from that Donald Duck cartoon. Here are the lyrics:

All my friends are either dead or dying
and those alive are not for lack of trying.
Sympathy is the only thing worth seeking
but every step my bones defy me creaking.
Another step, this watery grave is leaking
through the cracks of time in which we're peeking.
So you take the stage at your solo show
and the audience is talking.
The lights are bright and the crowd below
is an ocean slowly rocking.
And you sing "O Mort Amour, the Skull-Borne Mare!
Thou art the Specter slowly stalking" (me).
We are either dead or dying.
And you close your eyes as you feel the wave
and the math starts interlocking.
We are either One or nothing.

It's funny how things come full-circle like this. I thought I was the only one who was mystified by an applecore game from an old donald duck cartoon. Too weird!
