Headline: Loopholes push tenants out of condo converts.

Loophole: "an ambiguity (especially one in the text of a law or contract) that makes it possible to evade a difficulty or obligation."

The law: "Landlords only have to give the one-year notice if they're doing major renovations and need the unit empty.":

"If he sells a unit and the new owner has requested vacant possession, he can now issue a three-month notice to terminate a periodic tenancy," said Monica Frank, a consultant at Edmonton's Landlord and Tenant Advisory Board.

"I think people expected they could get a one-year notice just because it was being sold as a condominium … but we are trying to clarify that so people have a better understanding of what the changes mean."

The wording in the original CBC story, written when the law was passed:
Those wanting to evict a tenant in order to make major renovations or convert an apartment to a condominium will have to give at least a year's notice and won't be allowed to increase the rent during that time.

What's the loophole exactly? Seems the only way the landlord is obliged to give one-year is if they need to make renovations. And the ambiguity was in the reporting, not the law.

That's one hell of a snow job. Makes me wonder what else we're missing about the laws our legislature passes.

I might need a ride back. We'll see. Can't believe it's just around the corner.

Yeah, I know Andy, AD, and I are sharing a tent, and I think Pam's camping with us as well (although, for some reason, she's not keen on sharing with us.)

On a similar subject, does everyone have rides down there? I wouldn't mind driving, and I've got a pretty good capacity in the van, in case someone needs a ride (so far, I only know for sure about one willing passenger and one passenger we're abducting, so I still have room to seat four more (five if seatbelt laws don't apply to kidnap victims.))

Thanks guys - I hear camping at the hall is first-come, first-serve and that sounds like fun so that's my plan.

I haven't checked, but I don't think it would be too late to get a room at the Ramada. Also, there is still the Castor motel. It isn't very clean, and the managers are being difficult, but if anyone gets in a jam, they could probably still get a room the day of.

Well Jess you are too late to book a room at the Stettler Ramada (I think, you could probally still check) but I know a fair amount of people are camping. On the other hand a fair amount of people also booked rooms at the Stettler Ramada. So either choice you won't be totally alone.

so... McSweeny's issue 19 is a cigar box. a really cool looking cigar box... and it was like opening my grandpa's cigar box, only with irony... there were pamphlets on how to prepare for nuclear fallout, what set rhythm of warning whistles meant an air raid was over, and then more entertaining things like a memo from Donald Rumsfeld on how important it was not to leak private information, accompanied by GW Bush's dental records, and the booklet informing you how your horoscope can aid you in helping the Republican party... and a bunch of other stuff. interesting, and odd at the same time. ... especially the photocopies of old leaflets complete with holes and stains.
