When the Oilers decide that a free agent defenceman is too expensive to sign this off-season, you can blame the Philadelphia Flyers, at least in part. They traded the first round pick they acquired in the Forsberg trade to the Predators for the rights to Scott Hartnell and Kimmo Timonen, then signed both to long term contracts.
So, the bar has been set: $6.3 million for top-2 defenseman. Now you know that Sheldon Souray's gonna get a huge payday, and, as if he didn't have enough good news, Brian Burke's probably pinching himself, what with the price he's paying Pronger for three more years.
(EDIT: Oh yeah, and, lest I be the one to break the chain, the Flyers kersuck.)
