hmm... doubt it Albert. I don't think having kids instantly sucks the cool out of you, because there are a few cool parents out there... but it definitely makes it much more difficult for you to hold on to what little cool you have... I think having kids makes the slippery slope into lameness that much more slippery. but then again, how many childless old(er) people are cool either?
not that i'm slamming having children. someday i'll probably be taking a ride down that kiwanis slide myself. and the inevitable focus on discussion topics like diaper rash, potty training and child-safe locks will ensue...
i think coolness is a trait most often ascribed solely to youth, and the few youthful older folks out there. by the very nature of continuing to live, you lose that cultural caché

What the hell are some people's problem!? I went to my cousins rehersal dinner and out of nowhere my parents are trying to set me up with all my cousins unattached friends. Lucky for me most of them were way to old for my parents taste or I would be married right now. But really what the hell is their problem?! I can't be single and just go along doing Albert things? I have to be attached? married? What the Fuck!? Man I wish I could be anywhere else right now.
Only strange point today (as if it could get any stranger) seems my dad when he was younger was either deciding between a Mazda 626 or a Mazda Cosmo. This came up in a conversation about car engines, he said that a V6 was a waste on gas but not as wasteful as a rotary engine. What the hell?! He actually knew what a rotary engine was? He wanted to get the predecessor to the RX-7? He wanted to get something fast and flashy? Since when was he that cool? Guess having kids instantly sucks the cool out of you.

Just a reminder, folks, that the annual Golden Bears-Oilers' rookies game goes on Tuesday, September 12th at Clare Drake. I'm not usually excited by these, but word is that Mikhnov will make it there, and we all know about Rob Schremp. And if we don't,

from Douglas Coupland's recently released novel jPod on geeks and autism:
"After having worked at my current tech firm for the larger part of a year, I have come to the conclusion that my coworkers aren't so much idiots as they are fellow citizens in the thrall of various modes of persistent low-grade autism....
..."People with this sort of condition are known as 'high functioning' autistics because they can more or less operate in the day-to-day world. ...
..."Most people are able to sift out the day's excess information without ever thinking about it, but not the tech worker exhibiting autistic - okay let's just say the word: geek - to most geeks, a hug is not a hug, it's the physical equivalent of holding a novelty marine fog horn up to the ear and blasting it directly into the central nervous system. When you hug a geek, you're overloading them in a manner they find intolerable. They feel and express shock and revulsion when touched."
makes me feel better about being a nerd!
and, on irony:
"... it turns out that only twenty percent of human beings have a sense of irony - which means that eighty percent of the world takes everything at face value. I can't imagine anything worse than that. Okay, maybe I can, but imagine reading the morning newspaper and believing it all to be true on some level."
