So as to dissuade the rumour that I was temporarily (more?) insane when I mentioned this to people, here's the CBC story on the town of Golden, B.C., changing their name to win a contest:
The town of Golden has decided to change its name to Hockey, B.C. in an attempt to win a contest that would bring an NHL exhibition game to the small community.
A Golden high school class came up with the idea, and presented it to town council – in an effort to win the CBC-Kraft Hockeyville contest.

so... multitasking as usual, eh, Beck?
if anyone's interested, there's this interesting interview between Amy Goodman and Eugene Jareki director of "Why We Fight:" A new film opening in theaters nationwide takes a look at the American war machine over the past half century. "Why We Fight" looks at conflicts from World War II right up to the current war in Iraq to examine the political, economic and ideological reasons that drive American war policy. In this edition of Democracy Now! Amy Goodman plays excerpts from the film and speaks with award-winning director Eugene Jarecki.
it's 36 minutes long (20 of which is interview with Eugene Jarecki, the extra 16 are other Democracy Now news), but it's really good. Eye-opening if you ask me. click here (it's a download)
