Chemists, prepare to have your mind blown. This is the chart for the article:

Interesting, not sure about the methodology, etc., but thought-provoking.

Then, the comments. The first comment is a rant about sugar being a drug. People question it, and the commenter comes back with this:

I am trying to insert, make publicly aware this drug like thing, food.
Sugar is as addictive as cocaine, and causes obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease: Researchers

Sugar is One Atom Away from Cocaine
http://tugunchiro.com.au/articles/sugar-is-one-atom-away-from-cocaine.html

That last link leads to this:
“White refined sugar-is not a food. It is a pure chemical extracted from plant sources, purer in fact than cocaine, which it resembles in many ways. Its true name is sucrose and its chemical formula is C12H22O11.The chemical formula for cocaine is C17H21NO4. Sugar’s formula again is C12H22O11. For all practical purposes, the difference is that sugar is missing the “N”, or nitrogen atom.”

So, sugar C12H22O11 has 12 carbon atoms, 22 hydrogen atoms, 11 oxygen atoms, and absolutely nothing else to offer. The chemical formula for cocaine is C17H21NO4. Sugar’s formula again is C12H22O11. So the difference is that sugar is missing the “N”, or nitrogen atom. Got it!

Forget everything you knew about organic chemistry, or whether the relative amounts of different atoms matters, because the most important thing is that SUGAR IS ONE ATOM FROM COCAINE!!11!

I'm glad you've brought that photo to our attention, Alison. It's very troubling. I mean, look: based on the angle of ascension, the man-plane hasn't even reached his cruising altitude -- they're still in takeoff! -- and the passenger is already on her fucking laptop. Jesus.

It strikes me as likely that many in the group who read this particular board are familiar with the plan to send people to Mars and safely return them to Earth in 2018.

Now, consider the opportunity for such a mission to litterally put Russell's teapot into synchronus orbit half-way between Earth and Mars...

Can you imagine the size of that particular collective nerdgasm?

Names of the Games:

Most people who play these games know little about what it is like to live in Catan and Carcassonne. I decided to visit and see for myself.

...

In Catan, I stay with Hex Hallaggen and her family. Hex, a common name in Catan, is the matriarch of a family comprising her husband, his mother, and their three children. Their family has lived on the island for at least six generations. They feel no need to count back any further. Their forebears immigrated to work as sheepherders for Catan Livestock Exports, the company holding the husbandry monopoly, and they have continued at it. Their village also makes brick and mines coal, which they ship out weekly on the company trucks that rumble through the village.

(I should add that The Magazine is pretty great and well worth the price.)

Hey you occasional TF2 players. Have you seen these? They're all worth the watch, but that one is particularly great.
