Yeah I don't know why I posted it without context...
I got a shiny new underwater camera for fathers day (this one), had to try it out. Went to Jasper to assist with a course and see how well it works, but there's not much life in the lakes. The most interesting lake is Lac Beauvert by the Jasper Park Lodge - it's filled not by a stream/river but glacial melt water that actually bubbles up from below in these glacial vents. There are different structures of vents, this is my favorite because it looks volcanic - you can literally see the water coming into the lake. There are hundreds of vents all over the bottom of the lake.
The video is a bit shaky because the lake bed is all silt, and the slightest perturbation stirs it up in a big mushroom cloud of murk. So to get this shot without messing it up I'm completely upside down, fins straight up, with the camera held up above (below?) my head, and slightly positively buoyant - so I'm kicking with my fins to sink myself toward the vent without disturbing the bottom, and stopping kicking just in time to not hit the bottom and begin to float back up. It's surprisingly complex for a 30 second clip of what appears to be boiling mud.
This particular vent was found at a depth of 48 ft. The deepest part of the lake hits about 70 ft. The water temperature below about 45 ft is pretty stable at 6 degrees, but drops down to 2 degrees at the vents themselves. Basically, if I wasn't wearing 5mm thick neoprene gloves I could get frostbite.
I'm in Mexico from July 21st to August 4th, and I'll be getting in at minimum 8 dives while I'm there so hopefully I can light this place up with some colorful pics/video.

Beck, that's amazing. I need an explanation, though.
Mary, hope it's fun at the cabin!
