The Large Hadron Collider is nearly complete, with some early testing happening this month and full-scale testing happening next month. Though there are some fears about it, say, destroying the planet, CERN isn't worried:
Studies into the safety of high-energy collisions inside particle accelerators have been conducted in both Europe and the United States by physicists who are not themselves involved in experiments at the LHC. Their analyses have been reviewed by the expert scientific community, which agrees with their conclusion that particle collisions in accelerators are safe.
In any case, the collider and its ancillary parts do lend themselves to some stunning pictures:
