Computer security expert Bruce Schneier interviews the head of the TSA, Kip Hawley. That link is part 1 of 5. Part 2 was posted today (When can we keep our shoes on?). The remaining parts will be posted this week. I can't wait.

Having gone through pointless security no fewer than 8 times in the past two weeks, and having gone through the security at four different airports in that same time frame, it's nice to at least see the mindset behind the idiocy, rather than to simply be frustrated by it. One of my favorite parts:

If a TSO finds you or the contents of your bag suspicious, you might get interviewed and/or have your bags more closely examined. If the TSO throws your liquids in the trash, they don't find you a threat.

They don't find you a threat, but you still aren't allowed to carry that water bottle onto the plane. Nice.

yeah, I guess not. it's just weird and vaguely ominous that this is my 2nd road trip with them and the second time my right rear tire has gone on a road trip with them.

that whole "third time's a charm" thing is beginning to look worrysome.

so... comedy of errors that is my life...

2nd road trip with grad school friends and what happens but my second bout of car tire troubles. This was not your run-of-the-mill "oh my tire's flat" pre-trip realisation but the full-on highway-speed black smoke blow-out. it was awesome. and we've discovered that Millet doesn't have any tire repair/sales shops (despite selling rvs), so... Wetaskiwin, where the people are friendly, cars apparently cost less, and Canadian Tire does weird unnecessary things to your vehicle... but I have a new tire, again... 6 months after I replaced it. I think Goodyear fucked me the last time.

alright, so you think that'd be it, right? wrong! pull off at Airdrie to go to Cochrane and... stall... awesome. I think my car is in need of serious help. :(

but anyway, folk fest was fun, and damn hot. I don't know if it was the same here or not, but holy damn, that was too much sun and heat and not enough wind or rain (I feel better about the one day of misery at the EFMF now)
