In the grand scheme of things I don't think it makes much difference to your career... therefore take whichever seems more interesting. If they seem relatively equal in that regard, then take the one that can pay you for 4 months.

So, the question is thus; with whom should I work this summer?

I have two options. Both are in labs at the U and both will give me at least some experience. To begin, I'm in an immunology program. Both of these labs are ok for what I want to do, though neither are completely there. Furthermore, with one lab I will get 3 months of work, with the other 4.

The first lab, Dr. Jim Stone!!!! He's a biochemist who is working on a signaling pathway that just happens to be expressed mostly in T and B cells. Those are cells heavily involved in the adaptive immune response. He is the guy who can only pay me for three months. Working for him, I'll be doing a lot of ye old biochem stuff. For those of you took intro organic chems, it'll be a lot of that but with better equipment and using more advanced techniques.

The second lab, Dr. David Evans!!!! He's a virologist and the head of the MMI dept. at the U. He works on the pox virus and while neat, this isn't directly immunology work either. It's related yes, but not exactly what I want. The job I had lined up for the summer in Texas was what I was looking for. He'll be able to pay me for the entire summer, and I think, working for him I'll have some more, but not spectacular supervision. The downside here is that he'll have me creating special cell lines and remaking his plasmid libraries for him. So, it's mostly genetics and fairly menial genetics at that.

So, both are quasi useful and both give me some experience and will likely get me a job next summer in a lab that's more my style. The question I must ask again, is which one will be better for me?
