Alison, I think it's a matter of having multiple protection rather than a single tool. (The pretend-doctor in me wants me to use the trendy medical term "broad-spec" here.)
Wikipedia is pretty thorough with regards to the nature of the beast, routes of infection, system effects (such as massive drains on your CPU cycles), and popular removal tools. And the beauty of Wikipedia is that I don't have to necessarily keep up with this stuff myself. (It's becoming harder and harder for me to stay on top of the tricks of the trade of keeping Windows machines squeaky clean; I hardly ever use them myself.)
Someone out there has Vista, right? How's the malware problem for the new OS? Any stories (or, better yet, non-stories)?
