Might seem totaly off base but did you leave your computer in a cold place for any period of time?

I think a chunk of my weekend will be spent playing with my computer. Thankfully I've got a previous presentation backed up on my usb key, but no fancy photos other than what I've already thrown in powerpoint.

It's all the rest of the crap I have to do that matters though, term papers etc. grr!

Norton ought not to be out of date, I've got a subscription for it (and it counts down the days until it expires ... and I need *Norton* to get onto the department server), um, it clears out spyware too, from what I can tell... and I don't know about the disk space thing... we'll see. Though, how can I be out of disk space already? I've only had it since October. It's just all of a sudden. I know the last time I used it I shut it down properly, and then, other than watching a dvd on it in the non-boot-up mode, I haven't done much to/with my laptop... and it just doesn't seem to run... and then everything runs soooooo slooooooow, it's like our old Windows 95 computer, only worse!

I've tried to boot up connected to the internet, and not; plugged into auxiliary power, and not. The next step may be to remove the battery... and then give it a good shake! (kidding!) I know there's a whole pile of processes running on it, but I don't know what they are to stop them from running... I'll have to figure that out I'm sure.

Spyware? Out of disk space? Norton out-of-date? Could be any number of things. (Although not having a working task manager sure limits your diagnostic possibilities.)

Booting into safe mode might be a good way to get things done diagnostically. If things don't work there, you might really be in trouble. At the worst, though, you ought to be able to back up your data and restore from a disk. (Which sounds like a reasonable option given where you're at at this point.)

(Although, with respect to Norton, sometimes the cure is as bad as the disease. If you do restore, maybe give the AVG a try...)

okay... i can get the internet to work... somewhat... but not much else. my network folders? open and freeze... ms word? i've tried twice now... to no avail... i did a Norton scan, and i'm virus-free... so WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???


oh, and what do you do when your task manager stops responding? haha.

I think I'm going to give up on technology for the rest of the night and start again early tomorrow... but I need to have a presentation together for my supervisor. aaaaa!

hey, anyone know what's wrong when you boot up, get the main screen of your compy and can't interact with anything? happened to me twice today... the third time, i could play minesweeper! and... once, I only got as far as to log in and sit there with the friendly windows blue screen and login icon 'please wait while windows configures your settings' or whatever...

what is wrong with my laptop?? :(

it was working fine two days ago, when I last used it. and no one else can use it unless they know my password (network requirement) help!

For Beck and Keri, specifically, and for everyone else who doesn't have a family physician, generally, I strongly recommend the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta website. They have a directory you can search for general practitioners as well as specialists. I'm surprised they don't more generally advertise this service, but it seems like an important tool.

Nope, you've got them all, Beck. I don't know what those chicks in the hot-tub who control cylon ships and speak gibberish are supposed to be, but I don't think they count as cylons for some reason. I think that model falls into the same category as a cylon Raider which is a living thing, but is more of a functional unit than a person.
