How do you know when Paras is done his exams? Rant time!

In today's Journal, there's an article by noted journalist (?) Lynda Steele entitled "Is Christmas vanishing from our vocabulary?" (Never mind that the word "Christmas" is used at least four times in headlines on the same page.)

Now, unfortunately, the article is in the Journal's subscriber section, so I can't really link to it. Fortunately, I can quote from it gratuitously.

Yes, the word Christmas is slowly and insidiously being erased from our collective consciousness.

Well, that's settled. Why let reality get in the way of a good, hackle-raising headline?

Those who have had to sit through my ironic declarations about the War on Christmas ("don't you know there's a War on", etc.) will know that this shit pisses me right off. That it's becoming an issue in Canada just annoys me more.

Now, Lynda Steele styles her journalistic opus in a "some people say" format. What I take away from it is that her "some people" are insane:
One fellow I know is angry saying, "It's time Canada got a backbone and told all those politically correct interest groups that Canada is historically a Christian society, and you better live with it."
Ok, well, technically, of the thousands of years that Canada has been populated, it's historically not been a Christian society, but that's beside the point. My question in this debate, as my question always has been, is if Christmas is so dear to you (which it clearly must be if you're making it a martyr to whatever your cause happens to be) why should it matter if the minimum wage cashier at Walmart wishes you Merry Christmas? Is your definition of this holiday so tenuous that it will be destroyed if some stranger doesn't refer to it for a month leading up to December 25th?
"I don't want Ramadan's name changed or watered down, or Kwanzaa or Hanukkah ... why change Christmas?"
What the fuck? Who's changing the name? When did that happen? I'd think Christians might have a say in what the name is; at least far more influence than retailers wishing "Season's Greetings".
I think we could all do well by chilling out just a little.
And the best way to do that is to invent controversy. Well done.

To be fair, I wouldn't quite go to these lengths on this issue. But come on. What exactly do the *cough* 'insurgents in the War on Christmas' want? Christmas is a statutory holiday. Everyone knows when it is. Everyone knows Christmas decorations when they see them. Everyone knows the word. For a religious holiday in an officially secular society, it's doing exceptionally well (almost as well as that other religious holiday that gets a stat. What's that again? Oh right, Easter. I wonder if that's related to Christmas in some way... If they were trying to destroy a religion, they wouldn't officially recognize two of its holidays, would they?)

You want a word disappearing from our vocabulary? Diwali. No one wishes me Happy Diwali anymore (or, more appropriately, Sal Mubarakh). And it's not even a religious holiday. So what's the problem? The stores don't even have Diwali sales! What gives? Why are the secularists trying to stop me from celebrating Diwali?! There's a war on to eliminate it from the public consciousness!!

How ridiculous.

Didn't watch the leaders debates last night? (I didn't...) CBC said it was Bo-ring. But the G&M said Martin was 'eviscerated'! (Ouch, thats not an 'exonerated'...)

For the English debate tonight... YOU can make it exciting! You can play Election Debate Bingo! (Personal favorite - "Let me be perfectly clear" - but I think Martin and Feschuk agreed they were recycling that one too much... right after it came out in a statement relased by the GG... whoops!)

Lemmie know how that goes though, I know I won't be watching that on a friday night.

(...Anyways since we all know insightful satire of American politics is more important that this stuff... here is some JibJab.)

hmm... I'm kinda getting excited for this new compuer. I wasn't really thinking of overclocking it right away, but I just found out that the processor I got is pretty good for OCing. Apparently it's not unheard of to get it to jump from the stock 3.2 GHz to 4.0 GHz without any hardware mods! I've heard you can get it running stable at 4 gigs out-of-the-box!!! Motherfucker. That's intense. Now I'm almost considering it... but I'm not sure if I have a good enough power supply... I guess I better check what kind of supply box I'm getting with that computer.

BUT SHIT... 4GHz!?? Hellsyessss...

edit: I shouldn't get too excited. I oughta make sure I run the computer normally for a good 6 months before I decide to go and void any warranties. This computer IS refurbished after all. But I just got damn excited to hear I may be able to push the 4GHz barrier. It's understandable, isn't it?

Speaking of which, did you guys hear about the japanese dude who pushed his P4 to 7.132 GHz!?? Check it here. What a fucked up cooling unit.

Sorry, ngz, I wish I could explain it, but I can't. I can only promise to improve things, when I get the chance.

THURSDAY NEWS
Hey all,

We are super excited to announce that our new in-studio website is up and running! The URL is still Thursday.net, so check it all out. The site was designed by everyone's favorite dude, Rob Dobi; he's been a friend for years now and has made some of the coolest t-shirt and merch designs for us. We've put up some videos and lots of photos of us hanging with Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios (www.tarboxroadstudios.com).

We will be updating the site very frequently as we take more photos, and as the record gets closer to being done. At some point we will put some music up on the site to share with everyone. We will also be including future tour dates as they come in...and there are going to be a lot of them soon!

You are keeping us totally excited! We can't wait to share these new songs with you.

Take care!

Tom, Geoff, Steve, Tim, Andrew, Tucker

ps. If anyone has questions about Rob Dobi check out www.robdobi.nu and www.fullbleed.org.
