What? How are you measuring efficiency, exactly? If you want to run a program that can be easily split into independent parts and you want to do it twice as fast as you normally could, it's much easier and cheaper to grab two of the current generation processors and split the work than it is to develop a processor that's twice as fast.

It already exists in a primitive form. Your graphics card is a separate processor. This is just taking division of labour and making it more efficient (reducing cost of communication between processors, etc.)

Multi-core processing is by no means an interim. It is, simply, the way architectures will be built in the future, particularly for multitasking systems (eg. personal computing.)
