Damnit, no time to get into multiprocessor CPU rant.
Let's just say this is the stuff that is in the next-gen gaming consoles and is already being used in CS research labs. *cough, cough*
I hope Volta/SOAD tix don't sell out before I get back. Par would be bummed.

Intel is going from single to quad-core with their processors (as in 4 harnessed processors on one board!). Dual-core CPUs are available this summer. The quad-core CPUs will be out in a year or so, and they will be 64-bit processors as opposed to the currently available 32. By 2007, multi-core CPUs (ie: more than 4) will likely be common.
Furthermore, I heard that the new windows OS (codenamed "longhorn") that is being developed anticipates 1 terrabyte HDDs, dual-layer DVD burners, 6 gigahertz processors, and 1 gigabit ethernet. Holy shit, talk about broadband!!! Computers of the near-future will be insane.
Funny thing is, I was just thinking the other day about how sad it is that computers don't seem to be developing as fast as they used to be... I mean, I used to get excited on a regular basis hearing about how fast the new CPUs would be when I was in junior high and to an extent high school... but lately it's been really slow. Fortunately, if the specs of next-gen CPUs are anything to go by it seems like this recent lull is only a temporary phenomenon.
