as hates computers, but talks about them anyway
- We were talking about this the other day at Chili's, but here's the link to it. A company called Canesta has developed a projection keyboard for the Palm Pilot.
When equipped with the Canesta Keyboard, the OEM device uses a tiny laser
"pattern projector" -- also developed by Canesta -- to project the image of
a full-sized keyboard onto a convenient flat surface between the device and
the user, such as a tabletop or the side of a briefcase. The user can then
type on this image and Canesta's electronic perception technology will
instantly resolve the user's finger movements into ordinary serial keystroke
data that is easily utilized by the wireless or mobile device. - In other news, for all those who were hit by the worms this summer in Windows XP, you'll be happy to know that they've hit Microsoft's bottom line. Not just by a little, either. This article says up to $768 million (okay, so that's a weekend for Gates, but still...) Flaws Threaten Microsoft
- Finally, it seems that lawsuit-happy SCO is now going after Hollywood. This is a little soap opera-ish, but let's see if I can explain. Unix, the operating system model studied worldwide, was developed by AT&T way back when. Since then, the license for Unix has moved from AT&T to another outfit called SCO and then to Caldera, who later changed their name to SCO (still with me?) Now SCO is suing IBM because they believe that IBM gave code from current versions of Unix to the developers of Linux (never mind that when SCO was Caldera, they also developed a version of Linux.) SCO claims they have proof, but will not show anyone unless they sign a non-disclosure agreement. (Also, because it seems lawsuits are good for the bottom line, as SCO's stock price has soared from $2-3 at the start of the year to $14-15 now.)
Now, they're threatening Hollywood. Funny thing is that all the people who say that hard work should be paid for and not free, use free technology such as Linux to develop awesome special effects technology for shitty movies. Nevertheless, SCO feels that they must go after anyone who they feel has wronged them (in other words, start lawsuits which will make them more money.) Here's the story, slightly less complex, if you want to read (and are still awake): Holding Up Hollywood
Bottom line is: "wooo! fancy keyboard!"

(As a side note, I was watching the Simpsons where Sideshow Bob was trying to get rid of television. In the underground strategy room where they discuss how to deal with Bob, next to Mayor Quimby is a character that looks suspiciously like a certain Dr. Fremdlieb (Strangelove.) Ah... the little things about that show are great...)

I think we can probably assume that if there are no more posts from Alison then she made it out. Or that the computers also turn themselves off as the door locks. Either way.
on another note, I am *precisely* 123 words short of the minimum for my lastest last-minute late-night attempt at an essay. This is the fifth essay in 2 weeks and I am really not caring anymore, especially as the clock ticks over and I know my bed is just over there so warm and soft.....
But Gandhi is really interesting.

Locks on the inside? That's pretty creepy itself, let alone all these mysterious noises.

- on a different note, I am sitting in an entirely (biological life-) empty (save for me) computer lab, where I swear I can hear keyboards typing away, and people discussing things. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! and it's really starting to creep me out. If you don't hear from me tomorrow, please check in GSB 221 to see if my corpse is hanging neatly from the projection screen or something... really creepy
oh, hey, Paras, funny you said that, I was sort-of wondering, but the article was definitely French, so I don't know... perhaps it's Frerman or something... you know how languages develop their own flavour... and maybe the translator just forgot to translate that word...
back to creepy... in fact I'm going to leave the room it's really getting to me... that and the door locks on the inside after 10, and it's 10!
