Hey Percy, there's a direct way that you can get in touch with Eric electronically. They've set up this brand new thing called electronic mail (e-mail). You don't have to post your messages where everyone can read them now. You can send it straight to Eric.

    . . .

Okay, I've been enough of a dick. Here's something you folks may enjoy, though. In my continuing effort to catalog everything humorous that's remotely worthwhile to look at, listen to, or watch, I bring you:

    Red vs. Blue

Essentially, these guys have used Halo to make a bunch of movies. Apart from the fact that they've gone to the effort of using a video game for characters and cinematography, the dialogue isn't half bad either. The download may take a while to start up (be patient), but it's worth it.

Having problems with violation of copyright law? (RIAA listen up) All you need is creative edutainment to get the message across:

    Don't Copy That Floppy

As Tony pointed out to me, every cultural diet needs its recommended daily intake of cheese. Here's today's generous helping, brought back from the days of Oregon Trail and floppy disks.

as . . . ready as I'll ever be

Thanks for the support guys. I hope it pays off tomorrow.

Back to the worms. For those of you struck by this worm (for example, our family computer was just hit today because some idiot decided to let it through the firewall. Don't get me started on that), Sun is now opening early registration for their new OS (not that they're taking advantage of this or anything). Actually the info is on their website here.

This is supposedly a low cost (about 1/4 of Windows) operating system. It's built over Linux, but offers the usability and user-friendliness of Windows. I'm not sure how this will turn out, but if anyone can offer an effective and popular alternative to Windows, maybe it's Sun. And who knows, maybe it'll turn out like this:

I haven't put up a "Word-of-the-<insert time frame that best describes my random periodicity here>" in a while, so here are two, neither of which are single words:

    • Parkinson's Law of Data prov. "Data expands to fill the space available for storage"; buying more memory encourages the use of more memory-intensive techniques. It has been observed since the mid-1980s that the memory usage of evolving systems tends to double roughly once every 18 months. Fortunately, memory density available for constant dollars also tends to about double once every 18 months (see Moore's Law); unfortunately, the laws of physics guarantee that the latter cannot continue indefinitely.
< Par: I'm sure that we've all experienced this. The more space you have, the faster it gets filled up with movies, music, games, etc. (all perfectly legal, of course) >

    • pencil and paper n. An archaic information storage and transmission device that works by depositing smears of graphite on bleached wood pulp. More recent developments in paper-based technology include improved `write-once' update devices which use tiny rolling heads similar to mouse balls to deposit colored pigment. All these devices require an operator skilled at so-called `handwriting' technique. These technologies are ubiquitous outside hackerdom, but nearly forgotten inside it. Most hackers had terrible handwriting to begin with, and years of keyboarding tend to have encouraged it to degrade further. Perhaps for this reason, hackers deprecate pencil-and-paper technology and often resist using it in any but the most trivial contexts.

These are from The Jargon Dictionary in case you are interested in the bizarre terminology that computer people have come up with like PHB ("pointy-haired boss") or BOFH ("bastard operator from hell").
